Shanty, chantey, or chanty these are work songs to accompany rhythmical labor. The Dead Air Fresheners took their recording devices to the oceans and seas and the tributaries and drains that lead to them. These drones and noises serve to synchronize and thereby optimize labor. Where there are formed words they are in flexible lyrical forms, allowing for composed improvisations that can be lengthened or shortened with the aid of loops and/or ingestives. The call and response typical of shanties is found in each of the electronic dirges though often the “shantyman” is a synthesizer or the crash of the waves themselves. Today’s clippermen are often megabyte pushers and so these haunting maritime repetitions allow for screen sailors to accomplish more in their workday with a minimum of necessary volume increase.
